Crazy Quilt News

One week from tomorrow, on July 9 at 10 am we will kick off the new Crazy About Monarchs project. If you want to participate and need a kit, or haven’t yet received an email from me about it please reach out using whatever platform works best for you ( comments here, facebook, email, even texts to the store phone ). I am very excited to get that started and I know it will be fun but you need to be connected to be part of it.

For those who have been part of our Crazy Quilt Club in the past, or want to be in the future, I have a special message from Diane Johnson, who leads the Club. Be sure to have a look at that lovely embroidery design too. Crazy Quilts work beautifully in more subtle colors too.

We’re taking a summer hiatus from Crazy Quilt Club but I will be
contributing to Diana’s blog periodically to share progress on the memory
quilts that are the current group project.
We were inspired by talented crazy quilter Brian Haggard’s lovely work, with
its focus on vintage sepia photos and mostly neutral fabrics and
embellishments which blend so beautifully with them. One of the things I
love about crazy quilts is the embroidered motifs that are often used. In
this case the design has been created with only cream colored thread, felt
and buttons giving it the look of a lace motif – hence my name for it,
“embroidered lace.” It is essentially a variation of white work, a popular
embroidery style which features white thread stitched on white fabric but
we’ve given it lots of texture by using felt and buttons for part of the
One of the wonderful things about this technique is that it’s simple to do!
We’ve used only 3 or 4 stitches plus: felt, one perle cotton thread and
buttons – all of which Diana has at the shop along Brian’s inspiring book!
This technique will work for any of the motif designs in any of his books.
(Diana also has the photo transfer fabric required to create the pictures
that inspire the quilts. More about this part of the project later!)
Happy stitching! Diane

I hope that you all have a safe and happy holiday weekend. Stay in touch for more exciting news too, Art Camp for Adults is back this year!!!
